THE THREE PRONGS

UnifiedErie is based on a three prong approach to reducing violence in Erie County Pennsylvania. We believe that no one prong will be able to solve this problem alone.

PENNSYLVANIA YOUTH SURVEY(PAYS)

Erie County

PAYS is a biennial survey of youth in the 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades to gather information about their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors towards alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use to help communities address root causes of antisocial behavior.

The data gathered in PAYS serve two primary needs. First, the results provide school administrators, state agency directors, legislators and others with critical information concerning the changes in patterns of the use and abuse of these harmful substances and behaviors. Second, the survey assesses risk factors that are related to these behaviors and the protective factors that help guard against them. This information allows community leaders to direct prevention resources to areas where they are likely to have the greatest impact.

The Erie County Community Action Plan, UnifiedErie's prevention plan, uses PAYS as its primary tool to identify the priority risk and protective factors found in Erie County.
